This film is about Rommel's final days and doesn't show any of the campaign in North Africa, which was his famous moment as a commander, of course, and where he got the name The Desert Fox. It really should be titled Rommel's Final Days or something like that, to be accurate. Tukur's Rommel is very understated and intelligent. The performances are uniformly fine, the photography is crisp, judicious use is made of computer-generated effect, and the narrative covering the last seven months of Field Marshall Ervin Rommel is convincing. It's less dramatic and more believable than James Mason's tortured Rommel in "The Desert Fox," less corny actually. The Desert Fox is a black-and-white biographical war film from 20th Century Fox about Field Marshal Erwin Rommel in the later stages of World War II. Erwin Rommel, the Desert Fox, was a Field Marshal in the German army who did his best to win the war for Germany and failed. This excellent German film tells his story and it feels like the producers and director did their best to accurately portray Rommel and still be entertaining. Rommel is a German television film first shown on Das Erste. It is a dramatisation of the last days of German general Erwin Rommel.

Ernst Kaltenbrunner Hans Kremer : Erich Marcks Rommel ist ein deutscher Fernsehfilm aus dem Jahr Later, after Rommel is seriously injured when his staff car is strafed by an Allied plane, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg Eduard Franz plants a bomb where Hitler is expected to be in conference with his general staff.
It explodes on cue, but the Führer survives. Thousands of suspects are tracked down and executed. An official silence surrounds Rommel.
Soon after, General Wilhelm Burgdorf Everett Sloane is sent by Hitler to present Rommel with a stark choice: he can either be charged with treason and executed by garroting which would also endanger his family, or he can commit painless suicide.
Rommel chooses the latter. He bids his wife and son goodbye, and climbs into Burgdorf's car for a rendezvous with his own fate. Prime Minister Winston Churchill delivers a speech in high regards of Rommel in the House of Commons as the film ends.
The film was based on a book by Desmond Young. This would go on to sell , copies in England. In February , before the book was published, it was announced Nunnally Johnson of Fox was leading the negotiations to obtain the film rights to the book.
Johnson would write and produce and Kirk Douglas was the first star mentioned. Johnson eventually made the film as the first part of his new five-year contract with Fox.
While writing it he says the British were generally positive Rommel had a very high reputation in Britain but there was some controversy in the US about a Hollywood studio making a sympathetic biopic about a German general.
Johnson later said, "If Rommel hadn't been involved in the plot against Hitler, this screenplay wouldn't have been written. Circumstances allowed Rommel to be a pretty good fellow because there were no civilians involved in the North Africa campaigns.
I have tried to write the script with detachment. There is no effort to solicit sympathy for him, except in the final sequence. There are the circumstances as he says goodbye to his wife and son to go to his death would undoubtedly create sympathy for any man.
Rommel was a very limited man intellectually.
