A year later, her best friend, Poison Ivy , gets her out during a prison break and tries to convince her that he does not love her.

Despite Ivy's support, Harley's attempt to break up with the Joker fails after he sweet-talks her into staying with him. The Riddler , who also escaped Arkham, provokes the Joker into sending Harley to kill him.

The Riddler captures her and Batman before giving the Joker the choice to save one while the other dies. When the Joker ultimately chooses Batman, Harley finally realizes she never meant anything to him.

After learning Ivy and Riddler devised the death trap to drive that point home and she was never really in any danger, Harley undergoes a costume change and officially breaks up with the Joker and declares her intention to make a name for herself in the criminal underworld.

Matt Garofalo Ben Jones Frank Marino. Believing she has to join the Legion of Doom to prove herself as a supervillain, Harley attempts to make a big splash by crashing one of their criminal enterprises with Ivy's help.

However, they accidentally crash a Bar Mitzvah for the Penguin 's nephew, Joshua. When the Joker gets wind of Harley's presence and arrives at the party, Harley struggles to dissociate herself from him and prove to the attending villains, Bane , the Scarecrow , and Two-Face , how much better she is doing without him.

This is exacerbated by her attempt to pull off a heist nearby, only to learn it was a staged heist with actors for Joshua to experience. Meanwhile, Ivy is relentlessly hit on by Kite Man , who inadvertently infects a group of boys with her pheromones; not realizing it will kill them by turning them into plants.

They rush to her apartment to retrieve the antidote and return in time to help Harley fight off the other villains. Using her psychology background, Harley convinces them to stop taking abuse from Joker, forcing the Clown Prince of Crime to leave.

Despite what happened, Harley remains committed to her goal of joining the Legion while Ivy cures the infected boys.

After the Joker hijacks a robbery she was committing, Harley realizes that she needs a crew to pull off legitimate heists and attract the Legion of Doom's attention.

However, she struggles to recruit others to her cause due to her gender and her past association with the Joker.

After talking with the Queen of Fables , Harley decides she needs other downtrodden villains like her. She starts by recruiting Doctor Psycho , who was kicked out of the Legion by Lex Luthor for calling Wonder Woman and Giganta the " C word " on national television.

They next recruit Gotham City's shapeshifting thespian extraordinaire Clayface after meeting him in a bar.

For their first heist, Harley decides to rob Maxie Zeus ' Olympic gold medals as revenge for insults he made against her during her quest.

Despite their initial struggles, they ultimately succeed after brutally beating up Zeus before Harley sells the medals to purchase a nuclear warhead and force Gotham into naming a highway after her.

Upon making the news, the media begins to consider her a potential competitor for the Joker, much to his ire. In search of a nemesis, Harley goes after Batman by stealing the Batmobile , but ends up with Robin Damian Wayne , making her the laughing stock of the criminal underworld.

Even worse, Robin appears on a talk show and lies about Harley agreeing to be his nemesis. After a failed attempt to get Superman to be her nemesis by kidnapping Lois Lane , Harley recruits King Shark into her crew, captures Robin, and threatens him into confessing he lied before revealing a talk show audience from behind a curtain to publicly humiliate him.

When King Shark goes berserk after smelling blood, Batman arrives and subdues him before getting into a three-way brawl with the arriving Joker, Harley, and Ivy.

The Joker ends the fight by kidnapping Robin and forcing Batman to pursue them. Much to Ivy's dismay, she and Harley's crew are evicted from their apartment by their cybernetic landlord Sy Borgman.

Batman later comforts a rescued Robin and assures him he can wait until he is ready for his own nemesis. While shopping around for a new lair, Harley cannot decide what her "brand" is and goes into a fourth degree brain-freeze.

Ivy has Psycho bring them, Clayface, and King Shark into Harley's mind and meet up with her consciousness. However, she accidentally triggers her mental defenses and locks them all in.

While trying to find the "Emergency Exit" in her subconscious, Harley discovers her indecision comes from the belief her "origin story" was not her decision and that she altered her memory to believe that her becoming a villain was Joker's doing.

Choosing the moment she broke up with him as her true "origin story," Harley somewhat cures somewhat. Meanwhile, Borgman finds Harley and the crew's comatose bodies and believes they committed suicide, so he takes them to an abandoned mall to cremate them.

At the last minute, everyone wakes up and nearly kill Borgman. Upon seeing the mall however, Harley decides to make it their new lair and allows Borgman to join her crew after learning he was a former secret agent.

Harley's crew steals a mysterious device from Wayne Enterprises , but Clayface's arm gets severed and comes to life. Becoming depressed after learning Batman fails to see him as a friend, Commissioner Gordon interrogates Clayface's hand for the location of Harley's crew, but ends up bonding with it.

While Harley, Clayface, and King Shark try to recover the hand, Ivy and Psycho seek revenge on an online personality called the Cowled Critic, who slandered them.

King Shark is beaten by police officers and sent to prison while Ivy and Psycho learn the Cowled Critic is his estranged son Herman, and makes amends with him.

While in a shoot-out with Gordon, Harley discovers the device is a teleporter when it sends her to the Batcave.

Once Harley realizes she had been selfish and ignoring her teammates, she encourages Batman to help stop Gordon after he starts obsessively defending the hand.

Batman reconciles with Gordon, Clayface reabsorbs his hand, and Harley and her crew escape. As they celebrate, they realize they forgot King Shark and quickly break him out of prison.

When the Queen of Fables is transferred from her U. Master Tax Guide Book prison to Arkham Asylum, Harley frees her so she can join her crew and help them steal a personal force field device from S.

When the Queen slaughters an innocent family who witnessed them, however, the horrified crew kick her out. They then use the force field device to steal a weather-controlling machine from Kord Industries to ransom Gotham, but the Queen shows up to steal it for herself.

They are interrupted by Jason Praxis, a surviving member of the family with electrical powers who seeks revenge on the Queen for their murder.

Harley uses the force field device to protect the Queen, subdue Praxis, and get her to leave. Killing Praxis on her way out however, the Queen tells Harley that only villains willing to cross any line can succeed and that she will regret letting her live.

The crew later tries to program the weather machine, but accidentally cause it to self-destruct. Meanwhile, Ivy starts dating Kite Man, but his idiocy leaves her embarrassed to be around him in public.

After Harley's crew steal Atlantean jewels, they are invited to join the Legion of Doom. Lex Luthor even allows Psycho to be reinstated.

He secretly reveals to Ivy however that he is not actually interested in Harley and will not let her join unless she joins as well.

Ivy refuses and tries to warn Harley of Luthor's treachery. Suddenly, Aquaman breaks into the Hall of Doom and beats up several villains while seeking revenge for Harley's theft, but she tricks him into breaking an aquarium and focus on saving the fish.

As thanks, the Legion inducts Harley as an official member. Harley accuses Ivy of lying to her and they angrily part ways. Meanwhile, Psycho and Borgman deal with a mutant monster in their lair's basement.

When Psycho tries to kill it, Borgman stops him; revealing the monster is his sister Mirielle, who got mutated because of him. Psycho uses his powers to let the siblings communicate and reconcile, but Mirielle is released into the streets and goes on a rampage.

The next day, Harley and her crew minus Ivy go to the Hall of Doom, only to encounter Joker. Much to Harley's surprise, the Joker congratulates her on joining the Legion of Doom, treating her as an equal.

Harley reconciles with Ivy and promises to help her attack an environmentally unfriendly company called Planetwide Pavers. Unlike Harley however, her crew are treated as lowly henchmen and Bane hires them to help him get revenge on a clerk for always getting his name wrong.

Harley attends a dinner date with the Joker to try to persuade him to convince Luthor to elevate her crew's status, but she has so much fun with him, she forgets to tell him.

While planting a bomb for Bane, King Shark ends up being hospitalized after the former loses patience and detonates it early. When Batman pursues them, Joker kisses Harley before shoving her out of his helicopter to slow the Dark Knight down.

While the crew and Ivy stand vigil over King Shark in the hospital, they see an out-of-context image of the Joker and Harley kissing on the news.

When Harley arrives, they accuse her of taking advantage of them and cut ties with her. Later that night, Ivy tries to attack Planetwide Pavers by herself, but gets captured.

Depressed over her crew abandoning her, Harley returns home to her parents in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn , but quickly becomes upset with her deadbeat father.

Later that night, an assassin attacks them and kills Harley's grandmother before she is able to defeat him. Her father claims he owes a loan shark money, so Harley beats him and his goons to force them to leave her father alone.

Meanwhile, Ivy finds herself trapped in a laboratory, but manages to use a dandelion to tell her sentient plant Frank to get Harley's help before learning that Scarecrow is her captor.

Another assassin attacks and kills Harley's grandfather before she defeats her. Suddenly, her parents attack her, explaining that someone put a bounty on her and they aim to collect.

An enraged Harley defeats them, but chooses to spare and disown them as they are not worth it. Just as Harley collapses from her injuries, Frank finds her and tells her Ivy is in trouble.

Elsewhere, Bane discovers that Joshua Cobblepot put the bounty on Harley as revenge for her ruining his Bar Mitzvah and berates him for using a traceable credit card before destroying it to cancel said bounty.

Harley brings her crew back together to apologize and request their help in rescuing Ivy. They agree to do so, but only for Ivy's sake. Meanwhile, the Scarecrow harvests Ivy's pheromones so he can use them to destroy Gotham before poisoning her with his fear toxin, sending her into a panic.

Psycho brings the crew into Ivy's head while Borgman protects their bodies. Inside her head, Frank informs them the only way to save Ivy is to destroy the thing she fears the most, which appears in the form of the Grim Reaper.

Harley defeats the Reaper, but sees her face under the hood before she and the crew wake up. The Scarecrow tries to escape on the Harley Quinn Highway, but Borgman transforms into a car so the crew can give chase.

Amidst said chase, Ivy tells Harley her fear is being abandoned by someone she trusted and that she resents her for being with the Joker instead of helping her.

Harley attempts to make amends by blowing off the head of her statue to stop the Scarecrow, but he succeeds in poisoning the Gotham Reservoir and infecting the city's water supply with Ivy's pheromones; turning most of Gotham's trees into violent monsters.

The Scarecrow starts crop-dusting fear toxin around Gotham's perimeters to force thousands of civilians towards the park with the murderous trees.

As Batman tracks him down, the Justice League arrives to stop the trees. They assume Harley's crew is behind the attacks and attempt to send them to the Phantom Zone , but Ivy uses Wonder Woman's lasso to prove them wrong.

Suddenly, the Queen of Fables traps the League in her fairy tale book before using a beanstalk to send Harley and her crew to be attacked by a giant cyclops.

With Kite Man's help, they are able to return to the ground safely. Just then, the Joker appears with a large tower and destroys the Hall of Doom as he enacts his plans to take over Gotham City and orders the Queen of Fables to kill Harley and her team.

Ivy uses the contaminated water to grow into a giant and fight the trees while Harley defeats the Queen of Fables, beheading her in the process.

Just as Harley makes amends with Ivy, the Joker kills the latter. Harley's crew, Frank, and Kite Man hold an impromptu funeral for Ivy before they join forces with Batman to avenge her.

While they distract the Joker, Batman skydives to the top of the tower to take him down. However, Clayface inadvertently ruins the plan and gets the crew and Batman captured while Harley is forced into hiding.

His takeover largely complete, Joker spends the next week subjugating Gotham and brutally torturing Batman and the crew, only to get bored.

Hoping to help, the Scarecrow unmasks Batman, but Joker kills him for ruining the "mystery". Meanwhile, Harley revisits Ivy's grave, where Frank and Kite Man tell her the crew is going to be publicly executed, so she surrenders herself in exchange for their lives.

Once her crew is safe, Harley tries to kill the Joker, but he overpowers her. Instead of killing her, he decides to drop her in acid that will render her "normal.

Batman saves Harley and Ivy before disappearing in the debris. Reunited, the crew reflect on everything that has happened amidst Gotham's ruins while a "normal" Joker emerges from the rubble.

Weeks after the Joker's defeat and Batman's disappearance, the President of the United States has declared the destroyed Gotham a no man's land while Harley and her crew revel in the resulting anarchy and Robin tries to take up the mantle of Batman.

GCPD 's surviving officers, with the exception of Gordon, have become outnumbered and unmotivated to restore law and order as various sections of the city have been taken over by the Penguin, the Riddler, Bane, Two-Face, and Mr.

Freeze ; who have formed the Injustice League following the Legion of Doom's destruction. Harley disapproves of their control, especially after they give her a small amount of territory, and attempts to rebel against them; only to get herself captured.

Months later, Ivy and the rest of the crew manage to break her out, giving her the chance to murder the Penguin and see that the rest of the Injustice League have taken over the rest of Gotham.

Seeing as how she was the one who defeated the Joker, Harley believes she deserves to rule the city and vows to take out all of her rivals.

Unbeknownst to everyone, two paramedics find Bruce Wayne among the rubble. After learning that the Riddler has power and clean water, Harley, Ivy, and Clayface make plans to infiltrate his stronghold, "Riddler University", while King Shark and Doctor Psycho venture through Two-Face and Bane's territories to secure a water filter.

However, Harley nearly blows her cover after attacking the mascot in front of the tour guide, Barbara Gordon. Harley and Ivy track down Barbara to kill her before she can warn the Riddler, but she tells them she wants to stop him after deducing he was responsible for kidnapping students ever since he took over and that she procured invitations for a party at a fraternity house where the disappearances occurred.

Harley and Ivy steal the invitations for themselves and Clayface and successfully enter the party, where they learn that the kidnapped students are being used as human batteries before the Riddler captures them.

Meanwhile, dissatisfied with doing nothing, Barbara becomes inspired by her father, Commissioner Gordon, to stop Riddler herself. Despite being outnumbered, she manages to take out the generator, subdue Riddler, and free everyone.

Instead of killing the Riddler, Harley, Ivy, and Clayface use him to power the mall, while Barbara makes the decision to become Batgirl.

After a failed attempt to infiltrate Mr. Freeze's lair, Harley and her crew decide to steal Firefly 's flamethrower from Doctor Trap 's museum in order to melt their way in.

She wore a black domino mask, white facial makeup, and a one-piece black-and-red motley outfit with a cowl. Harleen Quinzel, M.

D, is portrayed as having blond hair and blue eyes. She typically wears glasses, a skirt, high-heeled shoes, and a white lab coat.

In her early comic book appearances until , the character wore her original black-and-red costume from the animated series. In September , The New 52 rebooted DC's continuity.

In this new timeline, Harley Quinn had a revamped look that lasted until The New 52 showed Harley Quinn with an alternating black-and-red-toned outfit with a sleeveless top, elbow pads, tight shorts, knee pads, and boots.

Her hair color was altered to half-red and half-black, like the cap of her previous incarnation. Consistent with a new origin, her skin was bleached as the result of being kicked into a vat of acid by the Joker.

Following 's DC Rebirth , Harley Quinn debuted a new look in the third volume of her eponymous series, as well as the fifth volume of Suicide Squad.

Her hair color is now blonde with blue dip dye on the left side and pink red dip dye on the right, and she sports two new outfits.

One outfit consists of tight, blue and red shorts, a ripped tee-shirt, satin jacket, fingerless gloves, fishnet stockings, studded belt, and lace-up boots, much like Margot Robbie 's depiction of the character in the Suicide Squad film.

The character's other outfit is a two-tone, black-and-red suit consisting of a full-sleeve top, tight shorts, opaque stockings, garter belt attachments, and boots.

She has also been known to wear both red-and-black colored nail polishes on both her fingernails and toenails in an alternating fashion. Harley Quinn is adorned with various tattoos, including four diamonds on her upper right thigh.

Within the DC Extended Universe , both Harley and the Joker have several tattoos, with Harley having them on her cheek, forearm, legs, and abdomen.

In the Margot Robbie look or Suicide Squad look, her hair matches the blue and red of her eyeshadow to have sort of a "match-and-mismatch" look, but in later adaptions, the blue eyeshadow is on the opposite eye of where the red dye on her pigtail is, possibly to be a little more "mismatched" by the creators' idea of it.

After the success of The Animated Series , the character proved so popular she was eventually added to Batman comic book canon. The comic book version of Quinn, like the comic book version of the Joker, is more dangerously violent and less humorously quirky than the animated series version.

Despite her noticeably more violent demeanor, Harley does show mercy and compassion from time to time; she notably stops Poison Ivy from killing Batman, instead convincing her to leave the hero hanging bound and gagged from a large statue.

A Harley Quinn ongoing series [22] was published monthly by DC Comics for 38 issues from to Creators who contributed to the title included Karl Kesel , Terry Dodson , A.

She is kidnapped by Peyton Riley, the new female Ventriloquist , who offers her a job; Harley turns the job down out of respect for the memory of Arnold Wesker, the original Ventriloquist, who attempted to cheer her up during her first week in Arkham while the Joker was still on the loose.

She then helps Batman and Commissioner Jim Gordon foil the impostor's plans. Although Riley escapes, Bruce Wayne is impressed with Harley's effort at redemption and agrees with granting her parole.

Having abandoned her jester costume and clown make-up, she now only wears an Amazonian stola or chiton. She befriends the former Catwoman replacement Holly Robinson and then succeeds in persuading her to join her at the shelter, where she is working as an assistant.

They are both brought to Themiscyra by "Athena" really Granny Goodness and begin Amazon training. Holly and Harley then meet the real Athena and encounter Mary Marvel.

The group reveals Granny's deception, and Holly, Harley, and Mary follow her as she retreats to Apokolips.

Mary finds the Olympian gods, whom Granny had been holding prisoner, and the group frees them. Harley is granted powers by Thalia as a reward.

Upon returning to Earth, the powers vanish, and Harley and Holly return to Gotham City. Harley Quinn joins forces with Poison Ivy Pamela Isley and Catwoman Selina Kyle in the series Gotham City Sirens.

Having moved in with Pamela Isley at the Riddler 's apartment, she meets up with Catwoman, who offers for the three of them to live and work together.

A new villain who tries to take down Selina Kyle named the Boneblaster breaks into the apartment and the three of them have to move after they defeat him.

Later, after a chance encounter with Hush , the Joker attempts to kill her, apparently out of jealousy. Quinn is rescued by Ivy and Catwoman, and it is later revealed her attacker was not the real Joker, but one of his old henchmen impersonating him.

In Gotham City Sirens 7, Harley Quinn visits her family in Bensonhurst , Brooklyn, during the holiday season. Harley's father is a swindler who is still in jail, and her brother, Barry, is a loser with dead-end dreams of rock stardom.

Her mother, Sharon, wants her to stop the "villain and hero stuff. Following several adventures with Catwoman and Ivy, Harley betrays them and breaks into Arkham Asylum, intending to kill the Joker for his years of abuse towards her.

However, Harley ultimately chooses instead to release the Joker from his cell, and together the two orchestrate a violent takeover of the facility that results in most of the guards and staff members either being killed or taken hostage by the inmates.

Harley and the Joker are eventually defeated by Batman and Catwoman, and Harley is last seen being wheeled away while bound in a straitjacket and muzzle.

Harley agrees, and the two set out to trap Catwoman. As Batman is about to arrest them, Catwoman helps the two of them escape.

In August , the debut of the six-issue miniseries Poison Ivy: Cycle of Life and Death reuniting Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman.

Harley appears in the debut issue as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, Ph. Following DC's relaunch of its titles, Harley Quinn's costume and appearance were fully revamped.

The New 52 shows Harley Quinn with a sleeveless top, tight shorts, and boots. Her hair color has also been altered to half-red and half-black, and her bleached white skin is the result of being kicked into a vat of acid by the Joker.

After a falling out with the Joker, she goes into a murderous frenzy, directed towards people responsible for the Joker's imprisonment.

Captured by the Black Canary , she is forcibly inducted into the Suicide Squad by Amanda Waller. However, when she discovers the Joker is rumored to be dead, it takes a further toll to her already-addled mind, and betraying the Suicide Squad, she puts their safety and secrecy at risk by turning herself into the Gotham Police Department to gain access to the skinned face of the Joker.

Deadshot lures Harley in close, shooting and severely injuring her during the conversation. Batman falls into a tank and demands Harley to tell him where the Joker is.

However, she only replies, in tears, he is no longer the Joker she fell in love with. On July 16, , DC announced that a new Harley Quinn ongoing comic book series would begin publication in November , co-written by Amanda Conner and her husband Jimmy Palmiotti , cover illustrated by Conner, and story illustrated by Chad Hardin.

In the series, Harley Quinn has become a landlady at Coney Island , is a part-time member of a roller derby team, and has returned to her work in psychology under her real alias, indicating that Harley's real identity is not public knowledge in the new status quo.

She also befriends an elderly ex-U. Under Conner and Palmiotti's writing, Harley was reinvented as an antihero who, after being released from the Suicide Squad and having her public files erased, values human life more or less and actively tries to improve life in her neighborhood, with mixed results.

While the comic book version of the character is still romantically linked with the Joker, a more recent development has Harley also romantically involved with Poison Ivy.

Harley Quinn series writers Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner confirmed the two characters are in a non-monogamous romantic relationship.

Harley agrees to help a woman whose daughter has been kidnapped by a gang in Hollywood. Harley Quinn has featured a few standalone specials which are not directly connected to the main series and feature multiple artists.

In the scratch and sniff -themed Annual issue, Harley briefly returned to Gotham to save her girlfriend Poison Ivy, as the Arkham Asylum employees monitoring her had brainwashed her to create a hallucinogenic pathogen.

She shares a brief intimate moment with Bruce Wayne. At Coney Island, Batman informs Harley that while he still distrusts her, he admires her attempt at heroism and promises not to interfere.

Harley kisses Batman and tells him to get "lessons" on kissing from Bruce Wayne, to which Batman privately grins.

In Futures End , a series set five years in the future, Harley mails herself to the Bahamas in an attempt to save money on airfare. The plane carrying her crashes over the ocean while flying through a storm, and Harley is washed up onto the shores of an island inhabited by an uncontacted tribe.

The tribe quickly declares her a goddess and is determined to have her meet their god-king who turns out to be the Joker.

After a fight and reconciliation, Harley learns the Joker has been living on the island as a god and making the inhabitants dress up as various superheroes and track him down while playing tricks on them.

It is announced she and the Joker are to be married. She is initially excited about the pending marriage until she discovers the two will be sacrificed to the island's volcano as their wedding ceremony ends.

A spin-off series entitled Harley Quinn and Power Girl was launched in June The series is set to run six issues and takes place while Harley has the amnesiac Power Girl convinced the two are a crime-fighting duo.

Harley has broken up with the Joker and has a romantic relationship with Poison Ivy. Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti's four-year run on Harley Quinn, after almost a hundred issues, came to an end with Harley Quinn 34 "That's all folks!

Harley has once again met up with Power Girl and even her new sidekick Terra. She has faced down multiple villains from the Penguin to the corrupt mayor of New York and is in the process of running for mayor herself when the previous mayor tried to solve the homeless problem by feeding them to cannibals.

She also runs a "vigilante for hire" group; she calls her Gang of Harleys and has numerous other allies and stalkers, including Red Tool a parody of Deadpool , Harley Sinn a former nemesis and various other allies she has made along the way.

The mayor countered by kidnapping her friend Mason and killing him. Harley got revenge, and then she and Ivy went to visit with her family.

They went to Arkham to ask Langstrom if he was behind it but found him gibbering in his cell. He did, however, mention there was "another.

Kidnapped moments later, they awoke in Langstrom's lab to find that his wife Francine was the newest Man-Bat, and she then jabbed Harley with the Man-Bat potion.

After that mess, a few of her old criminal buddies, including the Penguin, the Mad Hatter , the Scarecrow , Solomon Grundy, False Face , Mr.

Freeze , and numerous other Batman villains took advantage of Harley's grief over her dead friend Mason to split her from her team.

This was a temporary measure, and soon, Harley freed them from mind control and apologized for some things she said while on truth serum.

Working together with all of her friends and allies like Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, and Power Girl, Harley took the gang down.
